Paris Hilton gets locked up

Would you consider the news that Paris Hilton was sentenced to 45 days in jail, that newsworthy that it knocks off events such as the war in Iraq or Dafur off the front page of the BBC newsletter today? Well it sure did. And the article itself is featured under entertainment. Since when is a jail sentence for drunk driving entertainment?

Ms Hilton has been playing with this for a while now. Several traffic violations and warnings were topped by a drunk driving charge. Each violation added to the pile until the court determined that she had ignored all warnings and should now be punished accordingly. The MADD organisation (Mothers Against Drunk Drivers) should jump on this little news snippet and get some good PR.

What is more confusing about this situation, besides the fact that Paris Hilton is playing the dumb blond act again, as for instance, I wasn’t aware, I didn’t know, I didn’t do it on purpose etc. Is she going to go with that defense when she kills somebody when she is driving drunk? What is strange is that with all her money, she could have easily employed a chauffeur service to transport her while she was on probation. She really did not need to continue to drive herself and be a menace to other motorists.

One could almost excuse Ms Hilton her behaviour though. At the end of the sentencing her mother screamed at the judge telling him that he was pathetic. How can one grow up as anything else but a person who feels the world owes them everything when a parent leads by bad example. What would you do if your mother disregarded law and order, felt no responsibility towards other people and exhibited generally bad behaviour? One would imagine as a child you would buy into the mind-set by exhibiting the same social skills.

On an even more uncharitable note, perhaps Paris Hilton is following the celebrity move so well performed by Martha Stewart, of making a further fortune by earning disproportionately high PR ratings for her little stay in jail. Sell the story to the newspapers/TV/magazines. I would imagine that it will bite into Paparazzi earnings quite severely. No photos to sell for 45 days. Poor dears. On the upside, can you imagine, the world will have a holiday from Paris Hilton.

I can not believe how taken in the public is by Paris Hilton. And for what reason? I had to laugh when a news station placed a crawl on the screen with breaking news for this "event". How warped are we?

We Americans have no official royalty, so we make celebrities, athletes and the super rich our royalty. Occasionally, the British lend us theirs and we get to gawk at the queen for a few days. Federal judge Anna Diggs Taylor of Detroit told President Bush "... there are no hereditary kings in America and no powers not granted by the Constitution ...." However, Judge Taylor was wrong. Hollywood is full of multi-generational royalty (Sheens, Hiltons, Barrymores, etc.). It's not their fault - we did it. Us common folk!

I admit that I'm weary from the Paris Hilton coverage. It makes me miss the real newsmakers... like Anna Nicole. It's a twisted world we live in.
